Zinc and Clinafloxacin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS

Why this applies to Clinafloxacin

Clinafloxacin falls under QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS — the group Zinc interacts with.

Zinc can decrease the levels and clinical effects of quinolones antibiotics.
Quinolones form complexes with zinc in the gastrointestinal tract, reducing absorption of both the quinolone and zinc if taken at the same time. Advise patients to take these drugs at least 2 hours before, or 4-6 hours after, zinc supplements.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence B

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the practical issue with Clinafloxacin and zinc. This antibiotic belongs to the quinolone family, and quinolones like to grab onto minerals such as zinc in your stomach and gut. When they clump together, your body can't absorb the antibiotic well, so less of it gets into your bloodstream. The worry isn't extra side effects, it's the opposite: too little antibiotic to fully knock out your infection.

The good news is the timing fix is simple. Take your Clinafloxacin at least 2 hours before, or 4 to 6 hours after, any zinc supplement. That way they don't bind together. Before you juggle the two, check in with your pharmacist or doctor so you keep the antibiotic working its best.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Clinafloxacin page

“If you have been prescribed clinafloxacin, a quinolone antibiotic, start with the four interactions rated major, because they all do the same thing: apple, grapefruit, and orange juice, along with activated charcoal, can sharply cut how much of the drug you absorb, and an antibiotic that never reaches your bloodstream cannot clear the…”
