Zinc and Moxifloxacin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS

Why this applies to Moxifloxacin

Moxifloxacin falls under QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS — the group Zinc interacts with.

Zinc can decrease the levels and clinical effects of quinolones antibiotics.
Quinolones form complexes with zinc in the gastrointestinal tract, reducing absorption of both the quinolone and zinc if taken at the same time. Advise patients to take these drugs at least 2 hours before, or 4-6 hours after, zinc supplements.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence B

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: if you swallow your moxifloxacin (Avelox) and a zinc supplement too close together, the zinc can grab onto the antibiotic in your stomach and form a clump your body can't absorb well. The end result is that less moxifloxacin makes it into your bloodstream, so it may not fight the infection as strongly as it should. This isn't about extra side effects, it's about the antibiotic working weaker than intended, which matters when you're treating something like pneumonia or a skin infection.

The good news is the fix is easy and doesn't mean giving up either one. The usual advice is to take your moxifloxacin at least 2 hours before, or 4 to 6 hours after, your zinc. This is a well-recognized interaction, so check the exact timing with your pharmacist.
