Zinc and Gatifloxacin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS

Why this applies to Gatifloxacin

Gatifloxacin falls under QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS — the group Zinc interacts with.

Zinc can decrease the levels and clinical effects of quinolones antibiotics.
Quinolones form complexes with zinc in the gastrointestinal tract, reducing absorption of both the quinolone and zinc if taken at the same time. Advise patients to take these drugs at least 2 hours before, or 4-6 hours after, zinc supplements.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence B

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: when you swallow zinc and gatifloxacin at the same time, the two can grab onto each other in your stomach and form a clump your body can't absorb well. The result is that less of the antibiotic actually gets into your bloodstream. That matters because gatifloxacin needs to reach a high enough level to knock out the infection. If too little is absorbed, the antibiotic may not work as well, and that can mean a lingering infection or, down the road, bacteria that are harder to treat.

The good news is the fix is all about timing, not avoiding zinc entirely. A common approach is to take gatifloxacin at least 2 hours before, or 4 to 6 hours after, your zinc supplement. This is mostly a concern with zinc pills, not the small amounts in food. Please run the exact spacing by your pharmacist or doctor first.
