These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Whey Protein interacts with whole categories of medication. Doripenem falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Whey Protein in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS
1 of 2Why this applies to Doripenem
Doripenem falls under QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS — the group Whey Protein interacts with.
Whey protein contains minerals, such as calcium, that can bind to quinolones in the gut. To avoid this interaction, advise patients to take oral quinolones at least 2 hours before or 4-6 hours after whey protein.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's some good news that should ease your mind. The interaction on file is about whey protein binding up oral antibiotics in the gut, mainly because the calcium in whey can grab onto certain pills and keep them from being absorbed. But doripenem (Doribax) isn't a pill you swallow. It's given as an injection into a vein, so it never passes through your stomach to mix with your protein shake.
Because of that, this particular concern really doesn't apply to doripenem. The whey isn't going to weaken your antibiotic or change how well it fights your infection. It's also worth knowing this interaction is theoretical to begin with, based on chemistry rather than real-world reports. Still, if you have any questions about combining supplements during treatment, your pharmacist or doctor is happy to double-check for you.

TETRACYCLINE ANTIBIOTICS
2 of 2Doripenem also falls under TETRACYCLINE ANTIBIOTICS.
Whey protein contains minerals, such as calcium, that bind to tetracyclines in the gut. To avoid this interaction, advise patients to take oral tetracyclines at least 2 hours before or 4-6 hours after whey protein.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's some good news that should put your mind at ease. The interaction on file is really about oral tetracycline antibiotics, where the calcium in whey can bind the pill in your gut and keep it from being absorbed. Doripenem (Doribax) is given as an injection into a vein, not as a tablet you swallow, so there's no pill sitting in your stomach for whey's minerals to grab onto.
Because of that, drinking a whey protein shake shouldn't lower how well doripenem fights your infection. This concern is also only theoretical to begin with, based on how minerals behave, not on real cases. Still, since doripenem treats serious infections, it's always smart to run your supplement list by your pharmacist or doctor.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Doripenem page
“Two entries here matter more than all the others, and I would read them first. Doripenem (Doribax) is an intravenous antibiotic reserved for serious bacterial infections, which means anything that weakens treatment or piles on risk deserves genuine caution.”

- Muscle building and recovery
- Increasing daily protein intake
- Weight management
- Sports nutrition
- Meal replacement
Whey protein is a high-quality, complete protein made from cow's milk that can help people meet protein needs and support muscle growth when combined with exercise. About Doripenem Injection
What Is Doripenem Injection Used For?
Brand name: Doribax
-
Doripenem injection is used to treat serious infections of the urinary tract, kidney, and abdomen that are caused by bacteria. Doripenem injection is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat pneumonia that developed in people who were on a ventilator in a hospital. Doripenem injection is in a class of medications called carbapenem antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria.
-
Antibiotics such as doripenem injection will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Taking antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.
