Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
TETRACYCLINE ANTIBIOTICS
Why this applies to Demeclocycline
Demeclocycline falls under TETRACYCLINE ANTIBIOTICS — the group Whey Protein interacts with.
Whey protein contains minerals, such as calcium, that bind to tetracyclines in the gut. To avoid this interaction, advise patients to take oral tetracyclines at least 2 hours before or 4-6 hours after whey protein.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the thing to know about pairing whey protein with demeclocycline: whey is made from milk, so it naturally carries minerals like calcium. Calcium loves to grab onto tetracycline antibiotics in your stomach and gut, forming clumps your body can't absorb well. If that happens, less of your demeclocycline actually gets into your bloodstream, which could mean your infection isn't treated as effectively.
This is a theoretical concern based on how the drug works, not something proven in big studies, so try not to worry too much. The easy fix is timing. A common suggestion is to take your demeclocycline at least 2 hours before, or 4 to 6 hours after, your whey protein shake. Your pharmacist can help you set up a schedule that fits your day.
