Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS
Why this applies to Nalidixic Acid
Nalidixic Acid falls under QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS — the group Whey Protein interacts with.
Whey protein contains minerals, such as calcium, that can bind to quinolones in the gut. To avoid this interaction, advise patients to take oral quinolones at least 2 hours before or 4-6 hours after whey protein.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the simple version: nalidixic acid is an older antibiotic in the quinolone family, and like its relatives, it can get tied up by minerals in your gut. Whey protein carries calcium and other minerals that may grab onto the antibiotic before your body absorbs it. If less of the drug gets in, you may not have enough in your system to fully clear the infection it was prescribed for, like a urinary tract infection.
I want to be honest about the strength of this: it's a theoretical concern based on how these drugs behave, not something proven in big studies. To play it safe, many pharmacists suggest spacing them out, taking the nalidixic acid at least 2 hours before or 4 to 6 hours after your whey shake. Run the timing by your pharmacist or doctor to be sure.
