Here's the simple version: risedronate is already a tricky pill to absorb. Your body only soaks up a tiny fraction of each dose, and that fraction drops to almost nothing if there's calcium or other minerals in your stomach at the same time. Whey protein is naturally rich in calcium (it comes from milk), so taking the two together could bind up the risedronate in your gut and leave less to reach your bones.

This concern is theoretical, based on how the drug behaves rather than firm studies, but the fix is easy and worth doing. Take your risedronate first thing in the morning on an empty stomach with plain water, stay upright, and wait the full time on the label (usually 30 to 60 minutes) before your whey shake or any food. Ideally, space your whey to a different part of the day. Your pharmacist can confirm the exact timing for your version.

What Is Risedronate Used For?

Brand names: Actonel, Actonel Once a Week

Risedronate sodium tablets are used to treat and prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women, treat osteoporosis in men to increase bone mass, and treat and prevent osteoporosis caused by long-term steroid (glucocorticoid) use in both men and women. They are also used to treat Paget's disease of bone — a condition where bones break down and rebuild abnormally, becoming enlarged and weakened.

Risedronate sodium delayed-release tablets (brands Atelvia and Risedronate Sodium delayed-release) are approved specifically for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis only — not for the other uses listed above.
