Whey Protein and Carbidopa, Levodopa, Entacapone

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Major

LEVODOPA

Why this applies to Carbidopa, Levodopa, Entacapone

Carbidopa, Levodopa, Entacapone falls under LEVODOPA — the group Whey Protein interacts with.

Theoretically, whey protein might decrease levodopa absorption.
Small clinical studies show that concomitant ingestion of protein or high doses of leucine or isoleucine (100 mg/kg) and levodopa can exacerbate tremor, rigidity, and the "on-off" syndrome in patients with Parkinson disease.
Severity Major Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the practical side of mixing whey protein with Stalevo. The levodopa part of your medicine is the workhorse that gets converted into dopamine in your brain to ease Parkinson's symptoms. The catch is that levodopa is absorbed using the same pathway your gut uses to soak up amino acids from protein. So a big protein load, like a whey shake, can compete with levodopa and reduce how much actually gets into your system.

When less levodopa gets through, you may notice your medicine wearing off sooner, more shakiness (tremor), stiffness, or rougher "on-off" swings. This is mostly theoretical and dose-related, so casual amounts may not bother you. A simple fix many people use is spacing the shake away from your dose. Please check the timing with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.
