QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS
Why this applies to Lomefloxacin
Lomefloxacin falls under QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS — the group Whey Protein interacts with.
Whey protein contains minerals, such as calcium, that can bind to quinolones in the gut. To avoid this interaction, advise patients to take oral quinolones at least 2 hours before or 4-6 hours after whey protein.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the simple version: lomefloxacin (Maxaquin) is an antibiotic, and whey protein can get in its way. Whey is rich in minerals like calcium, and that calcium can latch onto the antibiotic in your gut. When that happens, less of the medicine gets absorbed into your bloodstream, which means it may not fight your infection as well.
The good news is this is mostly a timing issue, not a reason to avoid one or the other. A common tip is to take your lomefloxacin at least 2 hours before, or 4 to 6 hours after, your whey shake. Keep in mind this concern is based on how these substances behave rather than hard clinical studies, so it's more theoretical. Still, since a weakened antibiotic can let an infection linger, it's worth running your routine past your pharmacist or doctor.

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
