Whey Protein and Tigecycline

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Whey Protein interacts with whole categories of medication. Tigecycline falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Whey Protein in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Tigecycline

Tigecycline falls under QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS — the group Whey Protein interacts with.

Theoretically, whey protein might decrease quinolone absorption.
Whey protein contains minerals, such as calcium, that can bind to quinolones in the gut. To avoid this interaction, advise patients to take oral quinolones at least 2 hours before or 4-6 hours after whey protein.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Here's some good news that should put your mind at ease. The interaction in our database is really about oral antibiotics, where minerals like the calcium in whey protein can latch onto the drug in your gut and block it from being absorbed. Tigecycline (Tygacil) doesn't work that way. It's given only as an IV infusion through a vein, so it never passes through your stomach where whey could grab onto it.

Because of that, drinking a whey protein shake shouldn't lower how well your tigecycline works. This concern is also theoretical to begin with, based on pharmacology rather than real-world reports. Still, if you have questions about diet during treatment, your pharmacist or doctor can reassure you.

TETRACYCLINE ANTIBIOTICS

2 of 2

Tigecycline also falls under TETRACYCLINE ANTIBIOTICS.

Theoretically, whey protein might decrease tetracycline absorption.
Whey protein contains minerals, such as calcium, that bind to tetracyclines in the gut. To avoid this interaction, advise patients to take oral tetracyclines at least 2 hours before or 4-6 hours after whey protein.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's some good news that should ease your mind. The concern on file is that the calcium and other minerals in whey protein can bind to tetracycline antibiotics in the gut, which lowers how much gets absorbed. That matters for pills you swallow, because less drug absorbed can mean a weaker punch against the infection.

But Tigecycline (Tygacil) is given only as an IV infusion in the hospital, not as something you take by mouth. Since it goes straight into your bloodstream, your whey shake never gets a chance to bind it up. So this gut-binding interaction really doesn't apply here. If you have any questions about timing your supplements during treatment, your hospital pharmacist is happy to help.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

About Tigecycline Injection

What Is Tigecycline Injection Used For?

Brand name: Tygacil

Tygacil (tigecycline for injection) is approved for adults 18 and older to treat three types of serious bacterial infections: complicated skin and skin structure infections, complicated intra-abdominal (stomach and intestinal) infections, and community-acquired bacterial pneumonia (pneumonia caught outside a hospital).

It is not approved for diabetic foot infections or for pneumonia caught in a hospital setting, including ventilator-associated pneumonia — clinical trials showed it did not work well enough for those uses and was associated with higher mortality in patients with ventilator-associated pneumonia.
