Doripenem falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Fermented Milk interacts with.

Theoretically, antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of fermented milk.
Some fermented milk preparations contain live and active organisms, including lactobacilli and bifidobacteria strains. Simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of these organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and fermented milk preparations by at least 2 hours.

Here's the simple version: this works the other way around from what most people worry about. Doripenem won't be weakened by fermented milk, and fermented milk won't change how the antibiotic fights your infection. Instead, the concern goes the opposite direction. Doripenem (Doribax) kills bacteria, and it can't tell the difference between the bacteria making you sick and the friendly probiotic cultures (like lactobacilli and bifidobacteria) in yogurt, kefir, or cultured milk.

So if you're relying on those live cultures for gut benefits, the antibiotic may wipe out a good chunk of them. This is theoretical, based on how these drugs work, not a dangerous reaction. Keep in mind doripenem is given as an IV in a hospital setting, so timing food is less of an issue. If you want, ask your pharmacist about spacing things out or taking a probiotic later.

What Is Doripenem Injection Used For?

Brand name: Doribax

  • Doripenem injection is used to treat serious infections of the urinary tract, kidney, and abdomen that are caused by bacteria. Doripenem injection is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat pneumonia that developed in people who were on a ventilator in a hospital. Doripenem injection is in a class of medications called carbapenem antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria.

  • Antibiotics such as doripenem injection will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Taking antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.
