ANTACIDS
Why this applies to Aspirin, Citric Acid, Sodium Bicarbonate
Aspirin, Citric Acid, Sodium Bicarbonate falls under ANTACIDS — the group Blessed Thistle interacts with.
There are reports that blessed thistle increases stomach acid.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version. One job of your Alka-Seltzer is the antacid part (the sodium bicarbonate), which neutralizes stomach acid to ease heartburn and upset stomach. Blessed thistle is a bitter herb that may do the opposite by nudging your stomach to make a little more acid. In theory, that could work against the antacid and leave you with less relief from burning or sour stomach.
I want to be honest about how weak this is. It's based on anecdotal reports only, not solid studies, and it's rated minor. The acid-blocking effect would likely win out anyway. If you use both and your heartburn isn't easing, just check with your pharmacist before changing anything.

About Blessed Thistle
What is Blessed Thistle?
- Digestive upset and poor appetite
- Boosting bile flow
- General bitter tonic
- Supporting milk supply during breastfeeding (traditional)
- Wound care (traditional, topical)
Blessed thistle is a bitter herb traditionally used to stimulate appetite and ease mild digestive complaints. High-quality human studies are lacking, so its benefits are not well proven. It is likely fine for short-term use in small, food-like amounts, but it should be avoided in pregnancy and used with caution by people allergic to ragweed and related plants.
