PROTON PUMP INHIBITORS (PPIs)
Why this applies to Esomeprazole, Naproxen
Esomeprazole, Naproxen falls under PROTON PUMP INHIBITORS (PPIs) — the group Blessed Thistle interacts with.
There are reports that blessed thistle increases stomach acid.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Vimovo is a combo pill: esomeprazole lowers stomach acid, and naproxen is an anti-inflammatory pain reliever. The thinking here is simple. Blessed thistle is a bitter herb traditionally used to boost stomach acid, while esomeprazole is working to reduce it. So in theory they pull in opposite directions, and the herb might slightly blunt how well the acid-lowering part works.
I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. It is only theoretical and based on weak, anecdotal reports, so it is rated minor. Small, food-like amounts of the herb are unlikely to cause trouble. If you notice more heartburn or stomach upset while taking concentrated supplements, just check in with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Esomeprazole, Naproxen page
“Bleeding risk is the thread running through nearly this whole page. Vimovo pairs naproxen, an anti-inflammatory that already makes stomach bleeding more likely, with esomeprazole on board to shield the gut, and most of the supplements flagged here could push that bleeding risk higher still.”

About Blessed Thistle
What is Blessed Thistle?
- Digestive upset and poor appetite
- Boosting bile flow
- General bitter tonic
- Supporting milk supply during breastfeeding (traditional)
- Wound care (traditional, topical)
Blessed thistle is a bitter herb traditionally used to stimulate appetite and ease mild digestive complaints. High-quality human studies are lacking, so its benefits are not well proven. It is likely fine for short-term use in small, food-like amounts, but it should be avoided in pregnancy and used with caution by people allergic to ragweed and related plants.
