In vitro research shows that Boswellia serrata gum resin inhibits CYP2D6 enzymes.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
In this combo cold-and-flu product, the piece that matters here is the dextromethorphan (the cough suppressant). Your body relies on an enzyme called CYP2D6 to clear it. Lab studies suggest boswellic acids may slow that enzyme down, so in theory dextromethorphan could build up a bit and give you more of its usual effects, like drowsiness, dizziness, or a foggy, off-balance feeling.
I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It comes from test-tube research only, not from real people, so a real problem is far from certain. The acetaminophen and pseudoephedrine parts aren't really affected by this. Still, if you take boswellia regularly, mention it to your pharmacist before reaching for these cold medicines.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with these multi-symptom cold and flu products. In lab dishes, boswellia appears to slow down a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. Of the three ingredients in these combo medicines, that mostly matters in theory for how your body processes them. If that enzyme is slowed, levels of an affected ingredient could creep up a bit, which in plain terms might mean more drowsiness or dizziness from the dextromethorphan, or feeling a little more jittery or restless from the pseudoephedrine.
I want to be honest though: this is theoretical and comes only from test-tube research, not from real people. For most folks taking a short course for a cold, it's unlikely to cause trouble. Still, watch your total acetaminophen from all sources, and check with your pharmacist before combining them.

In vitro research shows that Boswellia serrata gum resin inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Other in vitro research shows that Boswellia serrata extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes at most concentrations, although it may modestly induce enzyme activity at low concentrations.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the honest take: this concern is mostly theoretical. In lab dishes, boswellia appears to block an enzyme called CYP3A4, and at higher amounts it could slow how your body clears the dextromethorphan piece of these cold-and-flu combos. If that happened, the dextromethorphan might build up a bit, which could mean more drowsiness, dizziness, or stomach upset. The acetaminophen and pseudoephedrine parts aren't really affected this way.
The reality is this has only been seen in test-tube studies, not in real people, so for most folks taking a short course of a cold product, it's unlikely to cause trouble. Still, if you take boswellia regularly, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.
