Boswellia Serrata and Acetaminophen, Phenylephrine, Chlorpheniramine

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Boswellia Serrata interacts with whole categories of medication. Acetaminophen, Phenylephrine, Chlorpheniramine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Boswellia Serrata in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

1 of 2

Why this applies to Acetaminophen, Phenylephrine, Chlorpheniramine

Acetaminophen, Phenylephrine, Chlorpheniramine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Boswellia Serrata interacts with.

Theoretically, Boswellia serrata might increase the levels of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that Boswellia serrata gum resin inhibits CYP1A2 enzymes.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the gist with this combo cold tablet (which mixes acetaminophen for pain and fever, phenylephrine as a decongestant, and chlorpheniramine, an antihistamine). In test-tube studies, boswellia appears to slow down a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. If that enzyme runs slower, certain medicines it helps break down could linger a bit longer in your system. In theory, that might nudge up the effects you'd already expect from these ingredients, like extra drowsiness or dry mouth from the chlorpheniramine.

That said, this is purely a lab-based, theoretical concern, and none of these three ingredients lean heavily on CYP1A2 for clearance. For most people taking a short course of a cold tablet, it's unlikely to cause real trouble. Still, a quick word with your pharmacist is smart, especially if you feel unusually groggy.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

2 of 2

Acetaminophen, Phenylephrine, Chlorpheniramine also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, Boswellia serrata might increase or decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that Boswellia serrata gum resin inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Other in vitro research shows that Boswellia serrata extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes at most concentrations, although it may modestly induce enzyme activity at low concentrations.

Here's the honest picture with this combo cold tablet. The concern on file is that boswellia might nudge an enzyme called CYP3A4, which helps your body process some medicines. But this is purely a theoretical, lab-dish idea, not something proven in real people. To make it murkier, boswellia seems to slow that enzyme at higher amounts and possibly speed it up a little at low amounts.

For Super Cold Tabs specifically, none of these three are prodrugs that need activating. If anything builds up, you might notice more drowsiness or dry mouth from the chlorpheniramine, or a touch more jitteriness from the phenylephrine. The practical takeaway: this is low on the worry list, but run it by your pharmacist, especially if you take boswellia daily.
