Bexarotene falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Boswellia Serrata interacts with.

Theoretically, Boswellia serrata might increase or decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that Boswellia serrata gum resin inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Other in vitro research shows that Boswellia serrata extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes at most concentrations, although it may modestly induce enzyme activity at low concentrations.

Here's the gist for Targretin (bexarotene). Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break this medicine down. In lab tests, boswellic acids from Boswellia serrata can slow that same enzyme (and at low amounts may even speed it up a little). If the enzyme is slowed, bexarotene could build up, which might mean more of its known side effects, things like high cholesterol or triglycerides, headache, tiredness, low thyroid activity, or low white blood cell counts.

Now, the honest part: this is a theoretical concern based only on test-tube research, not real patients, so we don't know if it actually plays out in people. Still, because bexarotene is a serious cancer drug that's closely monitored with bloodwork, please run any boswellia use past your oncologist or pharmacist first.

What Is Bexarotene Used For?

Brand name: Targretin

Bexarotene capsules (brands: Bexarotene, Targretin) are used to treat the skin symptoms of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) in patients whose disease has not responded to at least one prior systemic treatment.

Bexarotene gel 1% (brands: Bexarotene, Targretin) is used to treat the skin lesions of early-stage CTCL (Stage IA and IB) when other therapies have not worked or could not be tolerated. The gel is a topical therapy and is not intended for systemic use.
