Pimozide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Bulbine Natalensis interacts with.

Theoretically, Bulbine natalensis stem might reduce the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that Bulbine natalensis stem extract induces CYP3A4 mRNA expression and enzyme activity. Theoretically, this may increase the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates, but this has not been studied in humans.

Here's the situation with pimozide (Orap). Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break it down. In lab studies, Bulbine natalensis seems to rev up that enzyme, which in theory could clear pimozide out of your system faster. That might leave you with less drug on board and weaker tic control, so the Tourette's symptoms pimozide is keeping in check could creep back.

I want to be honest about the strength of this: it's theoretical, based only on test-tube work, not human studies. Still, pimozide is a drug doctors watch closely, so even small shifts matter. Don't change anything on your own. Just loop in your pharmacist or prescriber before adding this supplement.

What Is Pimozide Used For?

Pimozide tablets are used to suppress the motor tics (involuntary movements) and phonic tics (involuntary sounds or vocalizations) that occur in Tourette's Disorder. It is reserved for patients whose daily life or development is severely affected by these tics.

Pimozide is not a first-choice treatment, and it is not meant for tics that are only mildly bothersome or cosmetic in nature. It should only be considered when standard treatments have not worked well enough.
