Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the concern with pairing Bupleurum and Saphnelo (anifrolumab). Saphnelo is a biologic that calms an overactive immune system to help control lupus. Bupleurum, on the other hand, has shown in lab dishes and animal studies that it may stimulate immune activity. So in theory, taking Bupleurum could push back against what Saphnelo is trying to do, which might mean your lupus is not as well controlled (think more joint pain, skin flares, or fatigue).

I want to be straight with you: this is a theoretical worry based only on early lab and animal research, not on studies in real patients. Still, with a condition like lupus, it's not something I'd brush off. Please check with your rheumatologist or pharmacist before adding Bupleurum, and don't change your Saphnelo on your own.

About Anifrolumab-fnia Injection

What Is Anifrolumab-fnia Injection Used For?

Brand name: Saphnelo

Saphnelo (anifrolumab-fnia) is used to treat adults with moderate to severe systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) — a chronic autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the body's own tissues. It is used alongside standard SLE treatments, not as a replacement for them.

Saphnelo is not recommended for patients with severe active lupus nephritis (serious kidney inflammation from lupus) or severe active central nervous system lupus, because its effectiveness in those situations has not been established.
