Here's the idea behind this pairing. Rituximab (the active part of Rituxan Hycela) works by quieting down part of your immune system to clear out certain cancerous white blood cells. Bupleurum, on the other hand, has shown signs in lab and animal studies of revving up immune activity. So in theory, taking bupleurum could nudge your immune system in the opposite direction and slightly blunt how well rituximab does its job.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. This concern comes only from test-tube and animal research, not from people, so we really don't know if it matters in real life. Still, when you're being treated for lymphoma or leukemia, this isn't a drug I'd want working at less than full strength. Please check with your oncology team or pharmacist before adding bupleurum, and don't change anything on your own.

What Is Rituximab and Hyaluronidase Human Injection Used For?

Brand name: Rituxan Hycela

Rituxan Hycela is used to treat three types of blood cancer in adults: follicular lymphoma (FL), diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). Depending on the cancer type and stage, it may be given alone or alongside chemotherapy.

It is not approved for any non-cancer condition. Importantly, patients must first receive at least one full dose of rituximab by IV infusion before switching to this under-the-skin injection form.
