Omeprazole, Sodium Bicarbonate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Calamus interacts with.

Theoretically, taking calamus with drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 might increase drug levels and potentially increase the risk of adverse effects.

Here's the gist with Konvomep (omeprazole plus sodium bicarbonate). Omeprazole gets cleared by liver enzymes, and one of them is CYP3A4. In a lab dish, calamus appears to slow that enzyme down. If that held true in people, your body might clear omeprazole a little slower, letting levels drift up. Practically, that could mean slightly more of the usual omeprazole effects, things like headache, nausea, gas, or loose stools.

I'll be honest though: this is only test-tube evidence, not human studies, so the real-world risk is uncertain and likely small. The bigger issue is calamus itself, which contains beta-asarone and is best avoided. Before combining them, please check with your pharmacist or doctor.

Konvomep combines omeprazole (a proton pump inhibitor that lowers stomach acid) with sodium bicarbonate to protect it. The concern here is small and mostly theoretical. Some lab work hints that calamus may actually lower your stomach pH, meaning more acid. If that happened, it could work against what your medicine is trying to do, possibly making heartburn, reflux, or that burning chest feeling come back.

Honestly, this is rated as a minor, possible interaction based only on weak, anecdotal evidence, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. That said, calamus carries its own safety worries (it's banned from foods in the U.S.), so I'd steer clear of it anyway. If you're considering it, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Calamus is a swamp plant with a long history in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, mostly for digestive and nervous-system complaints. However, it contains beta-asarone, a compound linked to cancer and other toxic effects in animal studies, which is why the U.S. FDA banned it from foods. Because of these safety concerns and a lack of solid human evidence, it is generally best avoided.
