Captopril, Hydrochlorothiazide falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Canadian Hemp interacts with.

Canadian hemp contains cardiac glycosides. Theoretically, concomitant use of potassium depleting diuretics and Canadian hemp can increase the risk of cardiac glycoside toxicity due to potassium depletion. Some diuretics that can deplete potassium include chlorothiazide (Diuril), chlorthalidone (Thalitone), furosemide (Lasix), hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ, Hydrodiuril, Microzide), and others.

Here's the concern with this combo. Your blood pressure pill is a two-in-one: captopril (an ACE inhibitor) plus hydrochlorothiazide, a 'water pill.' That water pill can flush out potassium and lower your blood levels of it. Canadian Hemp contains natural heart-affecting compounds called cardiac glycosides, much like digitalis. When potassium runs low, those glycosides can hit the heart harder, raising the risk of toxicity, irregular heartbeats, nausea, and dizziness.

Honestly, the bigger issue is that Canadian Hemp is a toxic plant with no proven benefit and real poisoning risk, so I'd steer clear of it entirely. This particular interaction is theoretical, based on how the chemicals behave rather than solid studies. Please talk with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing anything new with your medication.

What Is Captopril and Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Capozide, Acezide

Captopril and hydrochlorothiazide tablets are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). The two ingredients work together to lower blood pressure more effectively than either one alone.

This combination may be started as initial therapy or substituted when a patient has already been adjusted on both ingredients separately. It is approved for patients with normal kidney function, and is used more cautiously in those with impaired kidney function.
