Why this applies to Flurbiprofen

Flurbiprofen falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Cannabis interacts with.

Theoretically, cannabis might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP2C9 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the cannabis constituents delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabidiol (CBD), and cannabinol moderately inhibit the CYP2C9-mediated 7-hydroxylation of S-warfarin in a concentration-dependent manner. In vitro research also shows that cannabis extracts modestly inhibit the CYP2C9 metabolism of tolbutamide; extracts providing the specific cannabinoids CBD and cannabigerol (CBG) had stronger inhibitory effects than extracts containing THC and CBD.

Your body clears flurbiprofen mainly through a liver enzyme called CYP2C9. Cannabis compounds (THC and CBD) appear to slow that enzyme down, so in theory flurbiprofen could clear more slowly and build up a bit in your system. Flurbiprofen is an active drug, not a prodrug, so higher levels would mean stronger effects, including this NSAID's typical side effects like stomach upset, heartburn, ulcers or bleeding in the gut, fluid retention, and stress on the kidneys.

Here's the honest part: this is based only on lab (test tube) research, not on real people, so it's theoretical and may not happen at all. Still, it's worth mentioning to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

What Is Flurbiprofen Used For?

Brand names: Ansaid, Flurbiprofen, Froben, Flurprofen, Froben SR, Ocufen

Flurbiprofen tablets (sold as Flurbiprofen and Lurbiro) are used to relieve the pain, swelling, and stiffness of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

Flurbiprofen Sodium eye drops are a separate product used during eye surgery — specifically to keep the pupil from constricting (getting smaller) while the procedure is underway. This use applies only to the ophthalmic (eye drop) form.
