Why this applies to Trimipramine

Trimipramine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Cannabis interacts with.

Theoretically, cannabis might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP2C9 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the cannabis constituents delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabidiol (CBD), and cannabinol moderately inhibit the CYP2C9-mediated 7-hydroxylation of S-warfarin in a concentration-dependent manner. In vitro research also shows that cannabis extracts modestly inhibit the CYP2C9 metabolism of tolbutamide; extracts providing the specific cannabinoids CBD and cannabigerol (CBG) had stronger inhibitory effects than extracts containing THC and CBD.

Here's the gist for trimipramine (Surmontil). Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2C9, among others, to help break this antidepressant down. Lab studies suggest the compounds in cannabis (THC and CBD) can partly block that enzyme. In theory, that slower breakdown could let trimipramine build up a bit more in your system.

If levels climbed, you might notice the usual tricyclic effects more strongly: drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, blurry vision, dizziness when standing, or a faster heartbeat. I want to be honest though, this is based only on test-tube research, not real patient data, so it's far from certain. Still, since tricyclics already cause sedation and cannabis adds its own, please loop in your doctor or pharmacist before combining them.

What Is Trimipramine Used For?

Brand names: Surmontil, Trimip, Rhotrimine, Tripramine, Trimp

Trimipramine capsules are indicated for the relief of symptoms of depression. Endogenous depression — depression that arises from within, rather than from an obvious outside cause — is more likely to respond to treatment than other types.

In clinical studies, trimipramine worked as well as imipramine in hospitalized patients with depression, and was comparable to amitriptyline in less severely depressed outpatients.
