Laboratory research shows that carob, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Take carob 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the gist with carob and your fluoxetine (Prozac). Carob is rich in tannins and fiber, and lab research suggests these can grab onto things in your gut and slow how well some substances get absorbed. The worry here is purely about absorption, not about how your body breaks the drug down. In theory, taking a lot of carob at the same time as your pill could blunt how much fluoxetine you take in, which might make it work a little less well.

Honestly, this is a minor, mostly theoretical concern based on animal and lab data, not real-world cases. A bit of carob as food is unlikely to matter. To be safe, just space them out: take your fluoxetine first, then enjoy carob 30 to 60 minutes later. Any questions, check with me or your doctor.

Carob is a Mediterranean tree whose pods are widely used as a caffeine-free, naturally sweet cocoa alternative and as a thickener (carob gum). It is mostly eaten as a food and is generally well tolerated, and carob pod preparations have some traditional and limited research use for diarrhea, but evidence for most medicinal claims is limited. Check with your pharmacist or doctor before using it as a treatment, especially for infants or children.

Fluoxetine is approved to treat four conditions: major depressive disorder (MDD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), bulimia nervosa (a binge-eating and purging disorder), and panic disorder — with or without agoraphobia (fear of situations that feel hard to escape).

It works for adults across all four conditions, and for children and teens with depression (ages 8–18) and OCD (ages 7–17).
