Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Acetaminophen, Dextromethorphan, Doxylamine, Pseudoephedrine
Acetaminophen, Dextromethorphan, Doxylamine, Pseudoephedrine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Cauliflower interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the honest version when it comes to NyQuil and cauliflower: this is more theory than something I'd lose sleep over. Eating cruciferous veggies like cauliflower may nudge up an enzyme called CYP1A2, which could in principle speed up how your body clears certain medicines. The catch is that the four ingredients in NyQuil (acetaminophen, dextromethorphan, doxylamine, and pseudoephedrine) don't lean heavily on CYP1A2, so any real-world effect is likely tiny.
None of these are prodrugs that need that enzyme to work, so you're not at risk of suddenly losing pain relief or cough control from a side of cauliflower. Food amounts are very unlikely to matter. If you ever notice your cold medicine feeling weaker than usual, just check in with your pharmacist.
