Simeprevir Sodium falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Chlorophyll interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of chlorophyll with photosensitizing drugs may have additive effects.
Chlorophyll has been reported to cause photosensitization. In two case reports, pseudoporphyria developed after oral intake of chlorophyll. Theoretically, concomitant use with other photosensitizing drugs may exacerbate this effect.

Here's the simple version: this isn't about chlorophyll changing how your body handles simeprevir (Olysio). It's about your skin. Simeprevir is already well known for making you more sensitive to sunlight, and people taking it can get easy sunburns, redness, or even blistering rashes from sun exposure.

Chlorophyll supplements have been linked, in a couple of case reports, to a similar sun-sensitivity reaction. So the concern is that stacking two things that boost sun sensitivity could make sunburn-type reactions more likely. This is mostly theoretical and the evidence is modest, so don't panic. Just be smart about sun protection (sunscreen, hats, covering up), and check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding chlorophyll while you're on this treatment.

What Is Simeprevir Used For?

Brand name: Olysio

  • Simeprevir is used along with ribavirin (Copegus, Rebetol) and peginterferon alfa (Pegasys) to treat chronic hepatitis C (an ongoing viral infection that damages the liver). Simeprevir is in a class of medications called protease inhibitors. It works by decreasing the amount of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in the body. Simeprevir may not prevent the spread of hepatitis C to other people.
