Theoretically, concomitant use of clove may increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.

Here's the wrinkle with Vicoprofen (hydrocodone plus ibuprofen): the hydrocodone part is actually a prodrug. Your body uses an enzyme called CYP2D6 to convert some of it into hydromorphone, a more potent painkiller. Lab studies suggest eugenol, the main compound in clove, can slow that same enzyme down. In theory, that could mean a bit less conversion and possibly a little less pain relief, not more.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It's only been seen in test tubes, never confirmed in real people, and the spice amounts you'd get from cooking or normal food are very unlikely to matter. Concentrated clove oil or supplements are the bigger question mark. If you're using those regularly, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

Vicoprofen combines hydrocodone (an opioid pain reliever) with ibuprofen. The hydrocodone part is partly handled by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. The thinking here is that eugenol, the main compound in clove, may slow that enzyme down. If clove blocks CYP3A4, hydrocodone could build up a bit, which in theory might mean stronger opioid effects like extra drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, or slowed breathing.

The important part: this is based only on lab and test-tube research, and it has not been seen in real people. Everyday cooking amounts of clove are very unlikely to matter. Concentrated clove oil or supplements are where I'd be more cautious. If you use clove medicinally while taking Vicoprofen, just check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Here's the gist with Vicoprofen, which is a combo of hydrocodone (an opioid) and ibuprofen (an NSAID). The ibuprofen half is partly broken down by a liver enzyme called CYP2C9. In lab dishes, eugenol (the main oil in clove) slows that enzyme down. In theory, that could let ibuprofen build up a bit, which might mean more of its usual side effects like stomach upset, heartburn, or, with heavier use, stomach irritation or kidney strain.

The important part: this has only been seen in test tubes, never in actual people, so it's a weak, theoretical concern. Sprinkling clove on your food is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated clove oil or supplements are where I'd be a little more cautious. If you use those regularly, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Here's the gist for your Vicoprofen, which combines hydrocodone (an opioid pain reliever) with ibuprofen (an anti-inflammatory). The interaction on file only involves the ibuprofen part, and only with clove oil applied to the skin alongside a topical ibuprofen product. In lab studies, clove oil helped more ibuprofen soak through the skin. That's quite different from the pill you swallow, where this hasn't been shown to matter.

This is purely test-tube research, never seen in real people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Using clove as a kitchen spice won't affect your medication. Still, if you plan to use concentrated clove oil on your skin, just check with your pharmacist first.

Here's the thing to know about Vicoprofen: it combines hydrocodone (a pain reliever) with ibuprofen, an NSAID. Ibuprofen on its own can already nudge up your bleeding risk a bit by affecting how your platelets clump together. Clove contains eugenol, and lab studies hint that eugenol may also have a mild blood-thinning, anti-platelet effect.

So in theory, stacking concentrated clove (oil or supplements) with the ibuprofen part of Vicoprofen could add up to slightly more bleeding tendency, think easier bruising or a stomach upset that lingers. I'll be honest though: this is theoretical and has not actually been reported in people, and normal cooking amounts of clove are very unlikely to matter. If you use clove medicinally and take Vicoprofen regularly, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.
