Metformin XR falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Clove interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of clove extracts with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Clinical and laboratory research suggest that polyphenol extracts from clove flower buds might lower blood glucose levels. Dosing adjustments for insulin or oral hypoglycemic agents may be necessary when taken with clove. Monitor blood glucose levels closely.

Here's the simple version: clove, when taken in concentrated extract or supplement form, may have a mild blood-sugar-lowering effect of its own. Since Metformin XR already works to bring your glucose down, stacking the two together could, in theory, push your numbers a little lower than expected. That might show up as symptoms of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) like shakiness, sweating, dizziness, or feeling foggy.

I'll be honest, though: this is a theoretical concern based on how clove behaves in lab and early research, not strong human studies. Sprinkling clove on your food almost certainly won't matter. Higher-dose clove supplements are where I'd pay attention. If you want to use one, just check your blood sugar a bit more closely and loop in your pharmacist or doctor first.
