Coenzyme Q10 and Minoxidil

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Minoxidil

Minoxidil falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Coenzyme Q10 interacts with.

Theoretically, coenzyme Q10 might have additive effects with antihypertensive drugs.
Some clinical research shows that coenzyme Q10 can significantly lower blood pressure, although other studies have shown conflicting results.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: CoQ10 may nudge your blood pressure down a little on its own, and minoxidil (when used as the tablet for high blood pressure) is already a strong blood vessel relaxer. Put them together and the effects can stack, so your pressure could dip a bit more than expected. You might notice things like lightheadedness when you stand up, a faster heartbeat, or some fluid buildup and swelling.

To be fair, this is mostly theoretical, and the studies on CoQ10 and blood pressure are mixed and not very strong. For most people it's a minor concern, not a reason to panic. If you're on oral minoxidil for blood pressure, just check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding CoQ10 and keep an eye on your readings. The topical Rogaine you put on your scalp isn't a worry here.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Minoxidil page

“American hellebore heads the concerns for anyone taking minoxidil (Loniten, Rogaine), because even small amounts of its alkaloids lower blood pressure on their own, a dangerous match with one of the most potent pressure-lowering drugs prescribed. It is one of four major-rated entries among the 139 supplements and herbs on record, and t…”

About Minoxidil

What Is Minoxidil Used For?

Brand names: Loniten, Rogaine, Minoxidil

Minoxidil tablets are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) — specifically in patients who haven't responded well to other blood pressure medications. They are a powerful option reserved for difficult-to-control cases.

Topical minoxidil products — including solutions, sprays, gels, and foams from many brands — are used to regrow hair on the top of the scalp (called the vertex). Products labeled for men and for women may differ; for example, Bosley MD Regular Strength for Women and Dizop Minoxidil Topical Gel are each labeled for their specific intended users.
