Coenzyme Q10 and Methyclothiazide

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Methyclothiazide

Methyclothiazide falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Coenzyme Q10 interacts with.

Theoretically, coenzyme Q10 might have additive effects with antihypertensive drugs.
Some clinical research shows that coenzyme Q10 can significantly lower blood pressure, although other studies have shown conflicting results.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: methyclothiazide is a water pill that lowers your blood pressure by helping your kidneys flush out extra salt and fluid. CoQ10 may have a mild blood-pressure-lowering effect of its own. So when you take the two together, those effects could stack a little, nudging your numbers down further than the medication alone.

This is rated a minor interaction, and the research is mixed, so for most people it won't cause trouble. Still, if your pressure drops too low you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, or tired, especially when standing up quickly. If you decide to add CoQ10, it's worth keeping an eye on your blood pressure and mentioning it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can watch for any changes. Don't adjust your water pill on your own.

About Methyclothiazide

What Is Methyclothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Enduron, Aquatensen

  • Methyclothiazide is used to treat high blood pressure. Methyclothiazide is also used to treat edema (fluid retention; excess fluid held in body tissues) caused by various medical problems, including heart, kidney, and liver disease and to treat edema caused by using certain medications including estrogen and corticosteroids. Methyclothiazide is in a class of medications called diuretics ('water pills'). It works by causing the kidneys to get rid of unneeded water and salt from the body into the urine.

  • High blood pressure is a common condition and when not treated, can cause damage to the brain, heart, blood vessels, kidneys and other parts of the body. Damage to these organs may cause heart disease, a heart attack, heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, loss of vision, and other problems. In addition to taking medication, making lifestyle changes will also help to control your blood pressure. These changes include eating a diet that is low in fat and salt, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising at least 30 minutes most days, not smoking, and using alcohol in moderation.
