Butabarbital, Phenobarbital, Secobarbital falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) INDUCERS — the group Comfrey interacts with.

Theoretically, CYP3A4 inducers might increase the risk of adverse effects from the pyrrolizidine alkaloid constituents in comfrey.
CYP3A4 enzymes convert pyrrolizidine alkaloids, constituents of comfrey, to toxic metabolites. Some case reports show that enzyme inducers, such as phenobarbital, seem to enhance the toxicity of comfrey.

Here's the twist with this pairing. The concern isn't that comfrey changes how your barbiturate works. It's the other way around. Barbiturates like phenobarbital (and its cousins butabarbital and secobarbital) rev up a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Comfrey contains plant compounds called pyrrolizidine alkaloids, and that same enzyme turns them into chemicals that can harm the liver. So speeding up the enzyme could mean more of those toxic byproducts forming.

This is mostly theoretical, drawn from how the chemistry works, with a few case reports involving phenobarbital. Still, comfrey should never be swallowed by anyone because of liver risk. Topical use on unbroken skin is the only reasonable route. Please run any comfrey product past your pharmacist or doctor first.
