Cordyceps and Golimumab

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Golimumab

Golimumab falls under IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS — the group Cordyceps interacts with.

Theoretically, concurrent use of cordyceps might interfere with immunosuppressive therapy.
Animal and in vitro research suggests that cordyceps stimulates the immune system. However, limited clinical research suggests that taking cordyceps may lower the necessary therapeutic dose of the immunosuppressant cyclosporine, which suggests that cordyceps may have an immunosuppressive effect.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing about pairing cordyceps with Golimumab (Simponi Aria). Golimumab is a biologic that works by calming down an overactive immune system, which is how it eases the joint pain and swelling of conditions like rheumatoid arthritis or psoriatic arthritis. Cordyceps, on the other hand, is often promoted for immune support, and some lab and animal studies suggest it may rev the immune system up. In theory, that could tug against what your golimumab is trying to do and make your symptoms harder to control.

I want to be honest though: this is mostly theoretical and the human evidence is thin. The signal actually points both ways, so we can't say with confidence what will happen. Before adding cordyceps, please check with your doctor or pharmacist who manages your golimumab.

  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Golimumab page

“Echinacea is the entry I would flag first, since it is the immune booster people reach for at the first sniffle, and immune stimulation is exactly what golimumab (Simponi Aria) is designed to dial down. About Cordyceps

What is Cordyceps?

Cordyceps
  • Fatigue and low energy
  • Athletic performance and stamina
  • Respiratory and lung support
  • Immune support
  • Kidney health support
  • General wellness/anti-aging

Cordyceps is a fungus used in traditional Chinese medicine for energy, exercise performance, and lung and immune support. Human research is limited and mostly low quality, so its benefits are not well proven. It appears generally well tolerated in the short term, but quality varies and it should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding due to lack of safety data.

Golimumab injection is used to treat several inflammatory conditions. Simponi (subcutaneous) is approved for adults with moderately to severely active rheumatoid arthritis (in combination with methotrexate), active psoriatic arthritis, active ankylosing spondylitis, and moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis in adults and pediatric patients weighing at least 15 kg.

Simponi Aria (intravenous) is used for adults with moderately to severely active rheumatoid arthritis. Both products target the same inflammation pathway but are given by different routes and are each approved for specific conditions — they are not interchangeable across all uses.
