Ethinyl estradiol, Levonogestrel falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Cubebs interacts with.

Several compounds isolated from cubebs can inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) in vitro. So far, this effect has not been reported in humans. Theoretically, cubebs might increase the effects and side effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. These include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), diltiazem (Cardizem), estrogens, indinavir (Crixivan), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others.

Your birth control pill, Lybrel, contains ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel, and your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear the estrogen part. In lab dishes, certain compounds from cubeb berries appear to slow that same enzyme down. In theory, that could let estrogen linger a bit longer in your body, which might mean more of the usual estrogen-related complaints like nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, or bloating.

Here's the reassuring part: this is based only on test-tube research, and it has not been seen in real people. A sprinkle of cubeb as a kitchen spice is very unlikely to matter. If you're thinking about concentrated cubeb extracts or oils, just check with your pharmacist or doctor first to be safe.
