Why this applies to Heparin

Heparin falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Diosmin interacts with.

Theoretically, diosmin may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
A case of spontaneous intraventricular hemorrhage has been reported for a 77-year-old female after 6 weeks of warfarin therapy, despite an international normalized ratio (INR) of only 1.8. The patient had also been taking aspirin and diosmin for several years. Experts speculate that chronic intake of diosmin predisposed the patient to spontaneous intraventricular hemorrhage by inducing chronic microcirculatory hypertension and inhibiting platelet aggregation. The presence of aspirin was also thought to play a role in this event.

Heparin is already a powerful blood thinner that works by slowing your body's ability to form clots. The concern here is simple: stacking diosmin on top of heparin could nudge your bleeding risk up a little more. Diosmin isn't broken down the same way as some other drugs, so this isn't about it raising heparin levels. Instead, some lab and animal work hints that diosmin may slightly reduce how well platelets clump together, which could add to heparin's thinning effect.

I want to be honest about how thin the evidence is. This is mostly theoretical, with one older case report that also involved warfarin and aspirin. Still, watch for easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or dark stools, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Diosmin is a citrus-derived flavonoid most often used for vein-related problems such as chronic venous insufficiency and hemorrhoids, and it is usually combined with a related flavonoid called hesperidin. Some studies suggest it may help relieve leg swelling and hemorrhoid symptoms, but quality varies. What Is Heparin Injection Used For?

Brand name: Heparin

Heparin Sodium Injection is used to prevent and treat venous thrombosis (blood clots in veins) and pulmonary embolism (clots in the lungs). It is also used to prevent blood clots after major abdominothoracic surgery, to manage atrial fibrillation with embolization (a heart rhythm problem that can cause clots), and to treat disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), a serious condition where the blood clots too much throughout the body.

Additional uses include preventing clotting during arterial and cardiac surgery, treating peripheral arterial embolism (clots in the arteries of the limbs), and serving as an anticoagulant during blood transfusions, dialysis, and procedures using extracorporeal circulation (machines that temporarily take over heart or lung function).
