Why this applies to Naproxen

Naproxen falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Diosmin interacts with.

Theoretically, diosmin might inhibit the metabolism of CYP2C9 substrates.
Diclofenac is metabolized by CYP2C9 enzymes. Clinical and laboratory research shows that diosmin inhibits the metabolism of diclofenac. A pharmacokinetic study in humans shows that taking diosmin (Venex 500) 500 mg daily for 9 days prior to oral administration of diclofenac 100 mg increases blood levels of diclofenac and decreases diclofenac clearance.

Here's the gist: your body clears naproxen partly through a liver enzyme called CYP2C9. Diosmin appears to slow that same enzyme down. So in theory, if you pair the two, naproxen could hang around longer and build up a bit in your system. We actually saw this play out with a cousin drug, diclofenac, where diosmin raised its blood levels.

What might that look like with naproxen? A little more of its usual side effects, like stomach upset, heartburn, or a higher chance of stomach irritation. That said, this is a theoretical concern based on how the drugs work, not strong human proof for naproxen itself. Still, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Naproxen also falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS.

Theoretically, diosmin may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
A case of spontaneous intraventricular hemorrhage has been reported for a 77-year-old female after 6 weeks of warfarin therapy, despite an international normalized ratio (INR) of only 1.8. The patient had also been taking aspirin and diosmin for several years. Experts speculate that chronic intake of diosmin predisposed the patient to spontaneous intraventricular hemorrhage by inducing chronic microcirculatory hypertension and inhibiting platelet aggregation. The presence of aspirin was also thought to play a role in this event.

Here's the gist: naproxen is a common pain and anti-inflammatory medicine, and one thing it already does on its own is make platelets a little less sticky. That's why naproxen can raise the chance of bruising, stomach upset, or bleeding, especially in the gut. Diosmin may nudge in the same direction, since some lab work suggests it can also affect how platelets clump together. Stack the two and, in theory, the bleeding risk could add up a bit.

I want to be honest about how thin the evidence is here. This concern comes mainly from a single case report (which also involved warfarin and aspirin), so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Still, if you take diosmin with naproxen, watch for things like unusual bruising, black or bloody stools, or stomach pain, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Diosmin is a citrus-derived flavonoid most often used for vein-related problems such as chronic venous insufficiency and hemorrhoids, and it is usually combined with a related flavonoid called hesperidin. Some studies suggest it may help relieve leg swelling and hemorrhoid symptoms, but quality varies. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before starting it, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

What Is Naproxen Used For?

Brand names: Naprosyn, Naprelan, Anaprox, Anaprox DS, Naproxyn, Navalbine, Naproxen, Naprosyn EC, Napro-Na, Aleve, Arthroxen, Synflex, EC-Naprosyn

Naproxen tablets, naproxen sodium tablets, and naproxen oral suspension are used to relieve the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis. They are also used for tendonitis, bursitis, and acute gout, and for managing pain and primary dysmenorrhea (menstrual cramps).

Naproxen Sodium Controlled-Release Tablets are indicated for the same conditions plus the relief of mild to moderate pain. Several over-the-counter naproxen sodium products are indicated for the temporary relief of minor aches and pains from headache, backache, muscular aches, toothache, menstrual cramps, minor arthritis pain, and the common cold, and to temporarily reduce fever.
