European Barberry + Rabeprazole Sodium
Rabeprazole Sodium brand names: Aciphex, Aciphex Sprinkle.
European Barberry has a moderate interaction with Rabeprazole Sodium. Theoretically, European barberry might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Rabeprazole Sodium
Rabeprazole Sodium falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group European Barberry interacts with.
There is very preliminary evidence suggesting that berberine, a constituent of European barberry, might inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme. Theoretically, European barberry might have a similar effect.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear rabeprazole (Aciphex). Berberine, the main active compound in European barberry, may gently slow that enzyme down. If it does, a bit more rabeprazole could linger in your system, which in theory might mean slightly stronger effects or a touch more of its usual side effects like headache, diarrhea, or nausea.
I want to be honest about how weak this is. It comes from very early lab thinking, not from real cases in people taking barberry and rabeprazole together. Rabeprazole is also a pretty forgiving medicine, so a small shift usually isn't a big deal. Still, if you plan to use a concentrated berberine or barberry supplement, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

About European Barberry
What is European Barberry?
- Digestive upset
- Antimicrobial support
- Blood sugar support
- Cholesterol and metabolic support
- Skin conditions
European barberry is a shrub whose root, bark, and berries contain berberine, a bitter plant alkaloid that has been studied mostly in isolated form. Some early research on berberine is promising for blood sugar and cholesterol, but high-quality evidence for the whole barberry herb is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
About Rabeprazole
What Is Rabeprazole Used For?
Brand names: Aciphex, Aciphex Sprinkle
Rabeprazole delayed-release tablets (sold as AcipHex and as Rabeprazole Sodium) lower stomach acid. In adults, they are used for several conditions. These include healing erosive or ulcerative GERD, keeping it healed, and treating heartburn and other GERD symptoms.
They are also used to heal duodenal ulcers (ulcers in the first part of the small intestine). With the antibiotics amoxicillin and clarithromycin, they treat H. pylori infection in people with duodenal ulcer disease. They are also used long-term for conditions that cause too much stomach acid, including Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Adolescents 12 and older can take them for up to 8 weeks for symptomatic GERD.
