First, a real safety note: European mandrake is genuinely poisonous, and I would not put it anywhere near your HIV regimen. Setting that aside, here is the theory behind this interaction. Mandrake's tropane alkaloids (atropine-like chemicals) slow down how fast your gut moves. When food and pills sit in your stomach and intestines longer, your body can sometimes absorb more of an oral drug like darunavir (Prezista).

Darunavir is an active drug, not a prodrug, so more absorbed means a stronger effect and possibly more side effects such as nausea, diarrhea, rash, or headache. This is only a theoretical concern based on how the plant works, not proven in people. Still, please don't use mandrake, and check with your pharmacist or doctor.

About Darunavir

What Is Darunavir Used For?

Brand name: Prezista

Darunavir treats HIV-1 infection in adults and in children who are at least 3 years old and weigh at least 10 kg (about 22 lbs). It is not a cure for HIV, but it is used as part of a combination antiretroviral regimen to control the virus.

Darunavir must always be taken together with ritonavir — that pairing is required for darunavir to work properly. Both Prezista (brand name) and generic darunavir tablets are approved for this use. Prezista is also available as an oral suspension, which is particularly useful for younger or smaller patients.
