Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

First, the big-picture safety point: European mandrake is genuinely toxic and I would not recommend taking it at all. Setting that aside, here's the specific concern with Zepatier (elbasvir and grazoprevir). Mandrake's tropane alkaloids slow down how fast your gut moves things along. When your stomach and intestines empty more slowly, a pill can sit longer and you may end up absorbing a bit more of it than usual.

So in theory, mandrake could raise the levels of Zepatier in your body, which might mean more side effects like tiredness, headache, or nausea. I'll be honest, though: this is a theoretical interaction based on how these chemicals behave, not on real cases. The much bigger issue is mandrake's own toxicity. Please skip the mandrake and check with your pharmacist or doctor.
