Let me start with the most important point: European mandrake is genuinely poisonous, and I would urge you not to take it at all. But here is how it could interact with your maprotiline. Mandrake slows down how fast your gut moves things along. When your digestion slows, a pill like maprotiline can sit in your system longer and get absorbed more fully, which may push its levels up.

Higher maprotiline levels can mean stronger side effects, like heavy drowsiness, a dry mouth, blurry vision, constipation, dizziness when standing, and a faster heartbeat. What makes this pairing worse is that mandrake causes those exact same effects on its own, so the two could stack together. Maprotiline is not a prodrug, so this is about the drug building up, not weakening. This is a theoretical concern based on how these substances work, but please talk with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing anything with maprotiline.

  • Maprotiline is used to treat depression, bipolar disorder (manic depressive disorder; a disease that causes episodes of depression, episodes of mania, and other abnormal moods), and anxiety. Maprotiline is in a class of medications called tetracyclic antidepressants. It works by increasing the amounts of certain natural substances in the brain that are needed to maintain mental balance.
