Here's the basic idea with these two. Phenolphthalein is an old-school stimulant laxative, meaning it works by getting your gut moving so you have a bowel movement. European mandrake does the opposite to your digestive system. Its tropane alkaloids (like atropine and scopolamine) actually slow the gut down, which is part of why the plant is so dangerous.

So in practice, mandrake would tend to work against the laxative, leaving you constipated or with cramping, while the slowed gut keeps things sitting in your system longer. Keep in mind this is a theoretical concern based on how the chemicals act, not strong human studies. Honestly, the bigger issue is that mandrake itself is toxic, and phenolphthalein has largely been pulled from the market. Please don't take mandrake, and check with your pharmacist about safer options.
