Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

First things first: I really don't want you taking European mandrake at all. It's a poisonous plant, not a safe remedy, and that matters more here than the drug interaction itself. But here's the idea behind the interaction with your hepatitis C medicine, simeprevir (Olysio). Mandrake's tropane alkaloids slow down how fast your gut moves things along. When your gut empties more slowly, a pill like simeprevir can sit there longer and potentially get absorbed a bit more.

In theory, that extra absorption could raise simeprevir levels and make side effects like nausea, itching, rash, and sun sensitivity more likely. I'll be honest, this is theoretical and based on pharmacology, not real cases. Still, please don't use mandrake, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding anything new.

“Hepatitis C treatment with simeprevir (Olysio) runs for months, and steady drug levels decide whether the virus gets cleared, so the 160 supplements on this page deserve real scrutiny. Only three carry a major rating, but they are common ones: grapefruit and St.”
