European Mandrake and Triflupromazine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Triflupromazine

Triflupromazine falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group European Mandrake interacts with.

Concurrent use may cause additive anticholinergic effects and adverse effects. Anticholinergic drugs include conventional medications containing tropane alkaloids such as atropine, as well as phenothiazines, amantadine, some antiparkinson drugs, glutethimide, meperidine, tricyclic antidepressants, antiarrhythmic agents, and antihistamines.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Let me start with the most important point: European mandrake is genuinely toxic, and I'd urge you not to take it in any form. Setting that aside, here's why it matters with triflupromazine (Vesprin). This is an older antipsychotic in the phenothiazine family, and these medicines already have their own drying, anticholinergic effects on the body.

Mandrake's tropane alkaloids (atropine, scopolamine, hyoscyamine) block the same nervous system signals. So stacking them together could add up, leading to a very dry mouth, blurry vision, constipation, trouble urinating, a racing heart, confusion, or overheating in hot weather. This concern is theoretical, based on how both work rather than hard studies, but it's a sensible one. Please run any supplement past your pharmacist or doctor first.

This page covers European Mandrake only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Triflupromazine page lists 74 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

The most serious there right now: Henbane (major), Indian Snakeroot (major), Rauvolfia Vomitoria (major), Scopolia (major) and Alfalfa (moderate).

By severity: 4 major · 55 moderate · 15 minor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Triflupromazine page

“Henbane carries the clearest danger on this page. Taken with triflupromazine (Vesprin), an older phenothiazine antipsychotic, its atropine-like alkaloids pile onto side effects the drug already produces (dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, sedation), and it is one of just four major-rated entries, alongside scopolia, Indian snaker…”

European mandrake is a highly toxic plant from the nightshade family that was used in ancient and medieval times as a sedative and pain reliever.
