Evodia and Chlorpheniramine Tannate, Phenylephrine Tannate

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Chlorpheniramine Tannate, Phenylephrine Tannate

Chlorpheniramine Tannate, Phenylephrine Tannate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Evodia interacts with.

Theoretically, evodia might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that evodia extract inhibits hepatic CYP3A4. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

This combination product pairs an antihistamine (chlorpheniramine) with a decongestant (phenylephrine). Both are partly broken down by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In lab dishes, evodia appears to slow that enzyme down, which could in theory let these drugs build up a bit higher than usual.

If that happened, you might notice the antihistamine side more: extra drowsiness, dry mouth, or feeling foggy. The phenylephrine side could bring more jitteriness, a faster heartbeat, or a bump in blood pressure. Keep in mind this is only based on test-tube research, not real people, so the actual risk in humans is unknown and likely small. Still, it's worth running this past your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.
