Tizanidine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Evodia interacts with.

Evodia might reduce the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates through induction of CYP1A2.
Evodia extract and the evodia constituent rutaecarpine induce hepatic CYP1A2 enzyme activity. Evodia decreases levels of theophylline and caffeine, CYP1A2 substrates, by about 70% in animal models.

Here's the thing to know about tizanidine: your liver relies heavily on an enzyme called CYP1A2 to break it down. Evodia appears to speed up that enzyme, at least in lab and animal studies. So in theory, pairing the two could clear tizanidine out of your system faster, meaning it may not relax your muscles as well. You might notice your spasms or muscle tightness creeping back, or feel like your usual dose just isn't working.

I'll be honest with you, this is based on animal and test-tube research, not solid human studies, so we can't say exactly how much it matters in real life. Still, since tizanidine is dosed carefully, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them rather than adjusting anything yourself.

Theoretically, evodia might have an additive effect with drugs that prolong the QT interval, potentially increasing the risk of ventricular arrhythmias.
Evodia has demonstrated dose-dependent activity as a proarrhythmic agent in animal and in vitro studies. Evodia infusion in animals extends the action duration potential and induces prolongation of the QT interval and Torsade de pointes.

Here's the gist with Evodia and tizanidine: this isn't about how your body breaks the medicine down. The concern is the heart's rhythm. In lab and animal studies, Evodia has nudged the heart's electrical reset (the QT interval) longer and, in those settings, triggered a dangerous rhythm called Torsade de pointes. Tizanidine is grouped with medicines that can also stretch out the QT interval, so in theory, using both could add up.

Keep this in perspective. The evidence here is weak, coming only from test tubes and animals, not from people. Still, combining two things that may affect heart rhythm is worth a quick chat. Please run this by your pharmacist or doctor before adding Evodia, especially if you have a known heart condition.

What Is Tizanidine Used For?

Brand names: Zanaflex, Ontralfy

Tizanidine — available as tablets, capsules, and as the oral solution Ontralfy — is used to manage spasticity (abnormal muscle stiffness or spasms). Because it works for a relatively short window of time, it is typically scheduled around the activities when spasm relief matters most.

Ontralfy (oral solution) and Zanaflex capsules are specifically indicated for the treatment of spasticity in adults. Other tizanidine tablets and capsules are indicated for the management of spasticity more broadly.
