Dabrafenib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group False Unicorn interacts with.

In vitro, false unicorn extract inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) activity. Theoretically, false unicorn might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates. Drugs that might be affected include some calcium channel blockers (diltiazem, nicardipine, verapamil), chemotherapeutic agents (etoposide, paclitaxel, vinblastine, vincristine, vindesine), antifungals (ketoconazole, itraconazole), glucocorticoids, cisapride (Propulsid), alfentanil (Alfenta), fentanyl (Sublimaze), losartan (Cozaar), fluoxetine (Prozac), midazolam (Versed), omeprazole (Prilosec), ondansetron (Zofran), propranolol (Inderal), fexofenadine (Allegra), and numerous others.

Here's the situation with Tafinlar (dabrafenib) and False Unicorn. Your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break down dabrafenib. In a lab dish (not in people), False Unicorn slowed that enzyme down. If the same thing happened in the body, dabrafenib could build up a bit higher than expected, which might mean more side effects like fever, fatigue, headache, joint pain, nausea, or skin problems.

I want to be honest though: this is only a theoretical concern based on test-tube work, not on real patients, so we can't say it actually happens. Still, because dabrafenib is a serious cancer medicine, I wouldn't take chances. Please run False Unicorn by your oncologist or pharmacist before using it.

About Dabrafenib

What Is Dabrafenib Used For?

Brand name: Tafinlar

Dabrafenib is used to treat cancers that carry a specific change (mutation) in the BRAF gene — most often called a BRAF V600E or V600K mutation. These mutations cause cancer cells to grow out of control. Before starting this medicine, a tumor test must confirm the mutation is present.

It can be used alone or — more commonly — paired with another targeted drug, trametinib. Conditions it treats include advanced or inoperable melanoma (skin cancer), certain lung cancers, anaplastic thyroid cancer, low-grade brain tumors (glioma) in children, and other solid tumors with the same mutation that haven't responded to prior treatment.
