Dabrafenib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) INDUCERS — the group Borage interacts with.

Theoretically, taking borage with drugs that induce CYP3A4 might increase levels of pyrrolizidine alkaloid (PA) toxic metabolites.
Although borage seed oil contains little to no PAs, some borage plant parts, such as the leaf, flower, and seed, can contain hepatotoxic PAs. Hepatotoxic PAs are substrates of CYP3A4, which converts these chemicals into toxic metabolites. Tell patients to avoid borage preparations that are not certified and labeled as hepatotoxic PA-free.

Here's the thing to know about pairing borage with dabrafenib (Tafinlar). This isn't about your cancer medicine working better or worse. Dabrafenib speeds up a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. That same enzyme can turn the natural pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) found in some borage products into harmful byproducts that may stress the liver. So in theory, taking dabrafenib could make PA-containing borage a bit rougher on your liver.

The good news is this is a theoretical concern based on lab data, not strong human evidence, and most borage seed oil has little to no PAs. If you do want to try borage, only use a product clearly labeled PA-free, and please run it by your oncology pharmacist or doctor first.

About Dabrafenib

What Is Dabrafenib Used For?

Brand name: Tafinlar

Dabrafenib is used to treat cancers that carry a specific change (mutation) in the BRAF gene — most often called a BRAF V600E or V600K mutation. These mutations cause cancer cells to grow out of control. Before starting this medicine, a tumor test must confirm the mutation is present.

It can be used alone or — more commonly — paired with another targeted drug, trametinib. Conditions it treats include advanced or inoperable melanoma (skin cancer), certain lung cancers, anaplastic thyroid cancer, low-grade brain tumors (glioma) in children, and other solid tumors with the same mutation that haven't responded to prior treatment.
