    “The pyrrolizidine alkaloid (PA) constituents of borage can cause significant hepatotoxicity. PAs can occur in borage leaf, flower, and seed; borage seed oil contains little to no PAs. Chronic exposure to other plants containing hepatotoxic PA constituents has been associated with veno-occlusive disease (VOD). Subacute VOD causes vague symptoms with persistent liver enlargement.”

Pregnancy And Lactation Likely Unsafe

When products containing hepatotoxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA) are used orally. Borage plant parts, such as the leaf, flower, and seed, can contain hepatotoxic PAs. Repeated exposure to low concentrations of hepatotoxic PAs can cause severe veno-occlusive disease. Hepatotoxic PAs might also be carcinogenic, mutagenic, and teratogenic. These constituents are also excreted in breast milk. Tell patients to avoid borage preparations that are not certified and labeled as hepatotoxic PA-free. There is insufficient reliable information available about the safety of borage seed oil when used orally or topically during pregnancy or lactation.

What Is Lamotrigine Used For?

Brand name: Lamictal

Lamotrigine is used to treat several types of seizures in adults and children aged 2 and older — including partial-onset seizures, generalized tonic-clonic (grand mal) seizures, and seizures related to Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. In older teens and adults, it can also be used alone (monotherapy) after transitioning off another seizure medicine.

For adults with bipolar I disorder, lamotrigine is used as a maintenance treatment — meaning it helps delay the return of mood episodes like depression, mania, or mixed states. It is not approved to treat an active manic or mixed episode that's happening right now.
