Warfarin Sodium falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Borage interacts with.

Theoretically, borage seed oil may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
In healthy individuals, borage seed oil supplementation does not seem to affect platelet aggregation. However, gamma-linolenic acid, a constituent of borage seed oil, seems to decrease platelet aggregation by 45% and increase the risk of bleeding by 40% in animal and clinical research.

Here's the gist: warfarin is already a powerful blood thinner with a very narrow margin for error, so anything that nudges your bleeding risk matters. Borage seed oil's main ingredient, GLA, may make platelets a little less sticky, which could add to warfarin's effect and raise your chance of bleeding. Keep in mind this concern comes mostly from animal and lower quality studies, so it's more of a 'be cautious' flag than a proven problem.

What to watch for would be the usual warfarin warning signs: easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or blood in your urine or stool. Please don't start or stop borage on your own. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor first, and they may simply check your INR a bit more closely.

The plant's leaves and flowers can contain liver-toxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids, so only use products clearly labeled 'PA-free' and talk to your pharmacist or doctor before taking it.

What Is Warfarin Used For?

Brand names: Coumadin, Panwarfin, Sofarin

Warfarin sodium tablets and Jantoven tablets are both used to prevent and treat venous thrombosis (blood clots in the veins) and pulmonary embolism (a clot in the lungs). They are also used to prevent clot-related complications in people with atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm) or who have had a heart valve replaced.

In people who have had a heart attack, warfarin is used to reduce the risk of death, another heart attack, stroke, or other clotting events. It does not dissolve an existing clot, but it helps prevent the clot from growing and stops new dangerous clots from forming.
