Efavirenz falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group False Unicorn interacts with.

In vitro, false unicorn extract inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) activity. Theoretically, false unicorn might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates. Drugs that might be affected include some calcium channel blockers (diltiazem, nicardipine, verapamil), chemotherapeutic agents (etoposide, paclitaxel, vinblastine, vincristine, vindesine), antifungals (ketoconazole, itraconazole), glucocorticoids, cisapride (Propulsid), alfentanil (Alfenta), fentanyl (Sublimaze), losartan (Cozaar), fluoxetine (Prozac), midazolam (Versed), omeprazole (Prilosec), ondansetron (Zofran), propranolol (Inderal), fexofenadine (Allegra), and numerous others.

Here's the situation with efavirenz (Sustiva) and False Unicorn. Your body partly relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear efavirenz. In a test-tube study, False Unicorn appeared to slow that enzyme down. If that held true in people, efavirenz might break down a bit more slowly and build up in your blood, which could mean more of its typical side effects like dizziness, vivid or strange dreams, trouble sleeping, mood changes, or daytime grogginess.

I want to be honest: this is only a lab finding, not something proven in actual patients, so it may not amount to much in real life. Still, with an HIV medicine you want steady levels, so please don't add False Unicorn without checking with your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Efavirenz Used For?

Brand name: Sustiva

Efavirenz is used to treat HIV-1 (human immunodeficiency virus type 1) infection. It is always used together with other antiretroviral medicines — never on its own.

It is approved for adults and for children who are at least 3 months old and weigh at least 3.5 kg (about 7.7 lbs). Both the capsule and tablet forms are approved for this use.
