Fermented Milk and Cefotetan

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Cefotetan

Cefotetan falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Fermented Milk interacts with.

Theoretically, antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of fermented milk.
Some fermented milk preparations contain live and active organisms, including lactobacilli and bifidobacteria strains. Simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of these organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and fermented milk preparations by at least 2 hours.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: this one runs the other way from what people usually worry about. Cefotetan is an antibiotic that kills bacteria, and the live probiotic bugs in fermented milk (like lactobacilli and bifidobacteria) are bacteria too. So the concern isn't that fermented milk changes how your cefotetan works. It's that the cefotetan may wipe out some of those helpful organisms, making the probiotic part of the fermented milk less effective.

This is a theoretical idea based on how these things work, not strong proof, so don't lose sleep over it. Your cefotetan will still treat your infection just fine. If you want the probiotic benefit, a common tip is to space the fermented milk and your antibiotic doses by at least 2 hours. Check with your pharmacist if you're unsure.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Cefotetan page

“The two kidney warnings on this cefotetan (Cefotan) list are where to start. Cefotetan is an injectable cephalosporin antibiotic, usually given in the hospital or around surgery, and two herbs here, Siberian cocklebur and asarabacca, can damage the kidneys on their own.”
